After NRF, the marketing and sales team took EDGE global with appearances at conferences around Europe and Asia. To support this push into international markets, we needed multilingual support and a place for our video content and testimonials. I designed and developed these new features in a quick 2 week sprint.
Research Phase
The very first thing I did before starting the design of the site was a quick competitive analysis.
In our first discussion, I asked the Director of Sunrise if there was any website out there that he loved that really communicated innovation in the way he wanted this microsite to do. He was a big fan of the Samsung website, which at the time had a bold, black navigation bar and a minimal, clean, white content area with high quality photos of their products and blocks of graphically large text sprinkled throughout.
In addition to this site, I searched for other R&D, technology, and innovative companies and did a detailed analysis of the content and composition of their websites. I made a detailed list of all the links, categories, and types of content on the sites, and took stock of what proportion of the visual space was taken up by which types of content - images, text, and whitespace - and took notes on the trends I noticed across all the different sites I took inspiration from.
Testimonials
Testimonials from customers in store and potential clients / partners were added to add credibility to the product and show its real and potential impact.
Multilingual Support
Multilingual support doesn't just mean running copy through google translate. Care was taken with the font, size and minor adjustments to the layout in order to ensure maximum readability for native speakers. Most of the copy was professionally translated, with the exception of a few errors and last minute additions.
When visiting edgeshelf.com for the first time, the user is automatically directed to the language set in their browser / system settings on their device. In addition, a custom language switcher was added. The language switcher retains the page the user is on, giving a seamless translation effect.
